Claude Debussy's Études (L 136) are a set of 12 piano études composed in 1915. The pieces are extremely difficult to play, and Debussy described them as "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands". They are broadly considered his late masterpieces. tude 1 pour les cinq doigts d'après Monsieur Czerny (five fingers, "after Monsieur Czerny"). tude 2 pour les tierces (thirds). tude 3 pour les quartes (fourths). tude 4 pour les sixtes (sixths).

They were written in the midst of many other revolutions in music, and stake claim for Debussy as one of the earliest modernists. Pollini treats these etudes as the wild, frenetic, flighty, brilliant, fanciful, and melodramatic gems that they are. He is totally confident with his technique, attacking every phrase with the assurance that he will not miss a note.
