Bubblegum, the band's sixth proper album, goes a few steps further in their ongoing exploration of vintage psychedelia. I'm Aware", the opening track and lead single, signals a substantial change in approach, if not a drastic stylistic departure. The track begins with gently strummed acoustic guitar, and progresses to include lush strings, mellow coos, and an unusually clear and direct vocal performance by singer Ade Blackburn. Clinic are a tricky band to judge, if just because their consistency can seem so much like artistic stagnancy. They've never made a bad album; they always deliver at least a few undeniable gems per record.
LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Clinic Format: Vinyl. This is the very deluxe vinyl version of 'Bubblegum', the mind-blowing sixth album from Clinic. That means an extra 33% of k excellence! To top it off we've included download cards for both slabs of vinyl, afold out poster, an iron on T-shirt transfer and a window sticker.
By Adrian Mules, 05 October 2010, 10:00 BST. Those sneering, sinister, Liverpudlian lads from Clinc are back with their sixth album. Championed by Peel, the surgical mask sporting quartet, always sounded as if they were plotting the most evil of plans whist they recorded. Their previous five albums of Velvet Underground-esque strutting consistently offered a challenging and spite-ridden soundtrack that found them fans all over the world.
Bubblegum may be the sound of growth, but its progress is directed in a strangely traditional direction for a band formerly disinterested in such ordinariness. The Clinic presented here sounds like an entirely different band, perhaps a positive for a group whose freshness had been fading, but the album feels like a transition to a less interesting place, a bland stylistic middle ground populated by hordes of competent songwriters with mediocre materials. Clinic’s underlying trademarks may remain, but Bubblegum doesn’t do anything spectacular with them, and doesn’t come close to answering what.
