It’s James Brown‘s seminal Live At The Apollo. Listen to Live At The Apollo right now. Recorded at the famous and historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York in October 1962, the album was released some seven months later and captures the mesmerising live show of a peerless entertainer and his trusty group, the Famous Flames. Brown had made his first singles chart appearance seven years before with the top 5 R&B hit ‘Please, Please, Please,’ but Live At The Apollo delivered his LP chart debut, entering the Billboard chart at the end of June, 1963.

By 1962, Brown intended to showcase his act with a live album, especially after seeing Ray Charles hit with In Person in 1959. He'd played Harlem's Apollo Theater several times, but when Nathan refused to pay for a live recording on the basis that he wouldn't have a single to promote it, Mr. Dynamite had to take matters into his own hands. Brown personally funded the recording of his Wednesday night show at The Apollo on October 24th, 1962

This second Live at the Apollo caught Brown giving full stick to both his classic soul-ballad style and the funk his band was developing practically in front of the crowds' ears. Even better than previous issues is this terrifically remastered version. Introduction To The James Brown Show (Live At The Apollo/2001) by Frankie Crocker. I hadn't heard the original album, I've been satisfied with the Live in Dallas. the performances here BURN that one to me. I love both albums, but here I enjoy the more inimate setting and sound of the Apollo theatre.
