The ’70s sometimes get a bad rap: Often these years are remembered as the musical era that brought us disco at its absolute gaudiest. But there was far more going on in the decade than polyester, sequins and cocaine; the 1970s saw the rise of the singer/songwriter, the birth of punk rock, reggae’s infiltration of the mainstream and the long, strange trip led by some of psychedelia’s finest. 70. Various artists, The Harder They Come soundtrack (1973) There was a lot more to the early years of reggae than Bob Marley & the Wailers, and the best of the rest is brilliantly summarized on this soundtrack album for one of the best fictional music films ever made. 61. The Allman Brothers, Eat A Peach (1972) The first Allman Brothers Band album released after Duane Allman’s death is a sprawling beast that highlights every one of the band’s strengths.

Sucking the 70’s – Back in the Saddle is a follow-up album to the 2002 compilation Sucking the 70's. It was released in 2006 by Small Stone Records. Like the original, it features stoner rock bands covering songs from the 1970s. Are You Ready" - Sasquatch (originally performed by Grand Funk Railroad). Crazy Horses" - Puny Human (originally performed by The Osmonds). Red Hot Mama" - Clutch & Five Horse Johnson (originally performed by Funkadelic).

So much of '70s television is remembered through rose-colored picture tubes these days, but the decade's programming was often mediocre. And I was surprised to find I'm a lot funkier than I was forty years ago, because as a teen I couldn't handle "Brick House" by the Commodores (too sexy and downright nasty) but now I really like it. The mid-’70s Crimson line-up stood for taste and efficiency with a dry, dark wit, and Starless and Bible Black epitomized those qualities. John Wetton’s tersely macho posture suits the lyrics of Richard Palmer-James, who matches the album’s opening squall with the rude awakening of, Health food faggot. Even The Night Watch skips the mawkishness of other Crimson ballads. The live tracks are mostly improvised, which is one reason Bill Bruford renamed the album Braless and Slightly Slack
