Adam VIII Ltd. was a record label owned by Morris Levy. They were active from 1973 to the late 1980s, when it was sold to Rhino Records. The label also released many official compilations, with mispellings on the covers and labels.

Following the completion of the Mind Games album in September 1973, John Lennon separated from his wife Yoko and headed for Los Angeles to begin a period he later referred to as his ‘Lost Weekend’. In October he began recording the Back To Mono/Oldies But Mouldies sessions with Phil Spector and a host of . session musicians that were to become the Rock ‘N’ Roll album, but the project drunkenly spiralled out of control and was not eventually fixed and finished until February 1975 after he had returned to New York. Tired of all the aggravation and seven months of the messy lifestyle in Los Angeles, John returned to New York in April 1974 with a strong determination to improve the quality of his life and lifestyle. In June he began work on his fifth studio album, Walls and Bridges, with a more professional plan.

Listen to John Lennon Perform 'Stand By Me'. That album was released first, in October 1974, and climbed to No. 1, Lennon's second showing there as a solo artist. Imagine topped the charts in 1971. Rock 'N' Roll – which was going to be titled Oldies but Mouldies until a black-and-white photo of a 20-year-old Lennon in Hamburg inspired the cover art and a new title – managed to make it to No. 6, and was Lennon's last album before his five-year retirement. When he resurfaced in late 1980 with Double Fantasy, he was sober, reunited with Ono, a father to a five-year-old son and at a place far from the one he was stumbling through when he recorded Rock 'N' Roll. Three weeks after his comeback record came out, he was killed.

Not wanting to stop his work on Walls and Bridges, Lennon waited until after that album was complete before listening to the Spector sessions. The result: Because of his heavy drinking at the time he recorded them, Lennon’s voice sounded so bad that only four of the eight Mouldies songs were good enough to release, and only one of those ( Angel Baby ) was from the Big Seven catalog. The cover art was a cheap stock photo of Lennon taken in 1969.

Originally to be called "Oldies But Mouldies", recording started last quarter 1973 with Phil Spector in the producing chair. But, John and Phil constantly "disagreed" over the product, and the sessions fell apart. At this time Phil had the tapes, was then involved in a car accident and John was unable to get the tapes back from Phil. But, it was the "Roots" release that caused Apple to bring forward the.

The final studio album released by John Lennon before his five-year retirement into househusbandry, Rock 'N' Roll was a collection of cover versions of 1950s and early 1960s songs recorded during the legendary Lost Weekend. What he was telling me, in his own sweet way, was he had my tapes, not the John Dean Watergate tapes, he had my tapes locked in the cellar behind the barbed wire and the Afghan dogs and the machine guns. So there was no way you could get them. With the Spector sessions over, Lennon's partying intensified.
