Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.

The concerto was innovative in that it far outclassed its predecessors in terms of length and grandeur, and the orchestral tutti sections are unusually expansive for its time. In contrast to its current popularity, however, the concerto was despised by the critics at its premiere. The timpani motif that permeates the first movement evoked harsh criticism from many of Beethoven's contemporaries, some even nicknaming the piece "The Kettledrum Concerto. Further complaints were that the melodies are too simple, the piece too long, and the music too repetitive . ludwig van von beethoven op. opus op 61 violin solo concerto in d major D Major classical romantic allegro larghetto largo rondo.

Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos (Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64). Ludwig van Beethoven. 61: I. Allegro ma non troppo by Philarmonia Orchestra, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Yehudi Menuhin. The set was reprocessed by German Electrola in "Breitklang", which was a "space-opening" technology just this side of fake stereo. For at least a year I listened to the Menuhin record without much feeling one way or the other. Then one day I flipped the "mono" switch on my amplifier. All of a sudden, the fake "noise" that infected Menuhin's tone was gone, and there was his remarkable, sweet, luminous tone, a rare sound that shines from the inside.

Ludwig van Beethoven – Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61. Itzhak Perlman, Berliner Philharmoniker, Faniel Barenboim. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. When Itzhak Perlman played this concerto, many critics were surprised by the sobriety and quiet poetry of his interpretation, as though his many fine chamber-music recordings did not provide ample evidence of Perlman’s qualities as a serious musician. Although beautifully written for the instrument, Beethoven’s sole violin concerto does not offer many opportunities for the kind of virtuoso fireworks that have made Perlman famous.
