Distortion is the eighth studio album by American indie pop band The Magnetic Fields. It was released on January 15, 2008 on Nonesuch Records. As the album's title implies, several of the musical performances featured are distorted by various means. In particular, the album's sound was influenced by the 1985 album Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Distortion was recorded at Mother West in New York City. It was produced by Stephin Merritt and co-produced by Charles Newman.
Nightmare Revisited is a cover album of songs and score from the 1993 Disney animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was released on September 30, 2008 by Walt Disney Records to commemorate the film's 15th anniversary of its theatrical release. In addition to the album's eighteen covers are two re-recordings by original composer Danny Elfman, of the "Opening" and "Closing" tracks.
The Jesus and Mary Chain’s debut album still thrills on the first night of its 30th anniversary tour, writes Kitty Empire. If they just play Psychocandy it will be a very short gig indeed – 38 minutes 55 seconds. They don’t want to be presumptuous, announces the Scot, diffidently. But they assume we’ll want an encore. So the Mary Chain – as infamous 30 years ago for the violence of their gigs as they were for the hijab of noise that cloaked their heartbroken pop – play the encore first. It’s obliging of them. Black-clad, backlit by strobe lights, this pre-encore version of the Jesus and Mary Chain reveals that time only moves forwards. Other than the Reid brothers – Jim, and his elder brother.
Psychocandy is The Jesus and Mary Chain’s debut album. The album was originally released on November 18, 1985, via Blanco Y Negro Records. Inspired by ‘60s girl groups, and The Velvet Underground, the band fused elements of these influences to create loud, chaotic, yet catchy noise pop. Traditional pop structures and melodies are used throughout the album, along with blasts of distorted, buzzsaw guitars and feedback. The album went on to receive critical acclaim, and is very influential in the Alternative Rock scene, especially in the development of the Shoegaze genre.
Psychocandy Events is a live music promoter based in Berlin, run with enthusiasm, DIY spirit and proximity to the artists. What happens now when these complex, gyroscopic sounds are deflected and distorted, when you send them through the Raz Ohara grinder, so to speak?
Arguably Psychocandy is an album with one trick and one trick alone - Beach Boys melodies meet Velvet Underground feedback and beats, all cranked up to ten and beyond, along with plenty of echo. However, what a trick it is. Following up on the promise of the earliest singles, the Jesus and Mary Chain with Psychocandy arguably created a movement without meaning to, one that itself caused echoes in everything from bliss-out shoegaze to snotty Britpop and back again.
