Afric Pepperbird is the second album by Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and his first released on the ECM label performed by Garbarek's quartet featuring Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen.

Afric Pepperbird was his first recording for the then fledgling label and it features his quartet at the height of their powers, embellishing his muscular and imaginative compositions with outstanding, individualistic playing. From the eerie keening of the opening "Scarabee," framed by Jon Christensen's pinpoint delicate drums, to the hard-driving "Beast of Kommodo" with the leaders wailing bass sax to Rypdal's manic explorations on Blow Away Zone, this is one stellar effort.

Afric Pepperbird by Jan Garbarek Quartet/Jan Garbarek (CD, Jan-2001, ECM). This was Jan Garbarek's first album for ECM Records. So who better to have with him then guitarist Terje Rypdal. Great to see Jan and Terje at such a young age in the picture provided in the liner notes too. So we get that typical ECM atmosphere in this release but man these young guys hold nothing back at times. I'm so impressed with this album. It's very interesting, challenging and it holds my attention all the way through. Skarabee" is different with the xylophone, percussion and Thumb piano all coming and going.

Saturday, July 16, 2016. Jan Garbarek Quartet - 1970 - Afric Pepperbird. Jan Garbarek Quartet 1970 Afric Pepperbird. Like any artist, Garbarek has changed with time and, yes, with age, but already in Afric Pepperbird, his first album for ECM and one that would instigate an unbreakable association with the label, he invites us into a world that is at once playful and mature. Half of the album is made up of miniatures, Skarabée and Mah-Jong being the most precise and delicate among them, laced as they are with Christensen’s distinctive cymbal work and overall compositional sensibility; MYB and Concentus are simply gorgeous asides and drop like seeds into the album’s already fertile soil.
