Something Else by The Kinks, often referred to as just Something Else, is the fifth UK studio album by The Kinks, released in September 1967. It marks the final involvement of American producer Shel Talmy in the Kinks' 1960s studio recordings; henceforth Ray Davies would produce recordings. Many of the recordings feature the keyboard work of Nicky Hopkins and the backing vocals of Ray's wife, Rasa. Two hit singles are included: "Waterloo Sunset" and "Death of a Clown".

After James Brown died on Christmas Day in 2006, many obituary writers felt there was something that needed to be mentioned as a priority before they listed his many achievements, that the former Hardest Working Man In Show Business really was a nasty piece of work. I have no desire to buck this trend here. This phenomenal LP spearheaded a change in the perception of black musicians being only singles rather than album artists. Yet it would be another two years before the musician started living up to his initial promise as regards the Billboard chart. From 1965, he kicked off a series of hits, which included It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World, I Got You (I Feel Good) and the mighty Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag.
James Brown was not an albums artist. That’s a bad sales pitch. But paring down Brown’s career to the indispensable highlights misses something essential about the accurately self-styled Hardest Working Man In Show Business. More than anything, Brown was a striver. Brown kicks off the album by dropping an anthem for the entire Black Power movement and just over 10 minutes later, he’s singing Mama, come here quick, and bring me that licking stick over Jimmy Nolen’s trademark chicken scratch. But even Brown’s less fleshed-out songs and slow-burning covers like Let Them Talk managed to reach out their tendrils and find important folks to inspire. The politics and sounds of Say It Loud were a huge influence on Bob Marley and the Wailers, who even went so far as to cover the song I Guess I’ll Have To Cry Cry Cry. Soul On Top.
