Martin and Me (1996). 2 - So What Else Is New. 3 - Get Me. 4 - Blowin It. 5 - Repulsion.

J Mascis (known only to his mother as Joseph) has, in the words of erstwhile Canadian prime ministerial candidate Michael Ignatieff, had an interesting life. Emerging out of Amherst, Mass. in the mid-1980's, his band, Dinosaur J. arguably brought the guitar-as-guitar back into underground rock via Mascis' blisteringly untrained solos and defiantly fuzzy riffs, and their generally unkempt slacker aesthetic, complete with flannel, has been noted as an influence on the later, more ful, alt-rock groups of the early-90's. However, the angle from which the album is most immediately apparent is its presentation in terms of instrumentation and volume, and it is here that it can be perceived as an about-face from Mascis' previous work and his fans' expectations.

Best known as the remote frontman of the influential indie trio Dinosaur J. J Mascis was also an occasional producer and film composer. Born December 10, 1965 in Amherst, Massachusetts, he first emerged as a member of the hardcore unit Deep Wound, founding Dinosaur in 1984. Over the course of acclaimed LPs like 1987's You're Living All Over Me and 1988's Bug, the group emerged among the most highly regarded in alternative rock, with J Mascis' creaky, Neil Young-like vocals and monolithic guitar leads becoming primary influences on the burgeoning grunge movement.

Mascis’ third such album, Elastic Days, reunites much of the supporting cast he corralled for 2014’s Tied to a Star, including pianist Ken Maiuri, former Black Heart Procession singer and guitarist Pall Jenkins, and Miracle Legion leader Mark Mulcahy.

Near the end of Reagan’s first term, the Western Massachusetts Hardcore scene coughed up an insanely shaped chunk called Dinosaur. Comprised of WMHC vets, the trio was a miasmic tornado of guitar noise, bad attitude and near-subliminal ting. Like its predecessors, Elastic Days was recorded at J’s own Bisquiteen studio. Mascis does almost all his own stunts, although Ken Miauri (who also appeared on Tied to a Star) plays keyboards and there are a few guest vocal spots. These include old mates Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), and Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion, et., as well as the newly added voice of Zoë Randell (Luluc) among others. But the show is mostly J’s and J’s alone. He laughs when I tell him I’m surprised by how melodic his vocals seem to have gotten. Asked if that was intentional, he says, No.

Here, he tells us all about his long-term love for Fender's Jazzmaster, chaining together vintage fuzz pedals for giant tone - and recording the band's superb new album, 'I Bet On Sky'. It's refreshing to learn that even alt-rock icons face DIY challenges like the rest of us. When we called J Mascis at home to discuss Dinosaur Jr's new album, I Bet On Sky, a family member answers and says J is outside attempting to attach a roof rack to his car - and that things are not going wholly according to plan
